Viking 'Hammer and Sword' Pennies of York
$20.00
HANDMADE REPRODUCTION
These pennies were struck around AD 919-921 in Viking York. prominently bearing Thor's hammer on one side and a sword on the other. Around the sword, and very stylized, the legend reads 'SCI PETRI MO' (St. Peter's Money). The hammer side reads '+ERIVIITOII' (Eboraci Civitas - City of York).
Thor's hammer on one side with the Christian cross and mention of St. Peter on the other reflects the blending of worldviews and cultures at that time in ancient Britain.
